Drummer David Mahoney was born in New Orleans in
1979. His very musical family helped shape and develop his extremely
motivated musical appetite. Whether his father was listening to
Coltrane, or his mother playing Chopin etudes, David was exposed
to a wide variety of music very early on. In the eighth grade, while
attending De La Salle, David began his career as a drummer.
David has studied with Stanton Moore, Ray Fransen, Johnny Vidacovich
and Brian Blade, to name a few. As he continues his music education
at Loyola University, he hopes to also spread the word about his
latest musical project, The Gathering.
David is very sensitive to the different textures and colors that
develop a musician's palette, David is getting a lot of attention
from his peers. "David Mahoney's potential as a jazz drummer
is unlimited," says saxophonist John Ellis. Band member Tim
Green feels that "David is a musician on the quest of exploring
and presenting the many facets of jazz. He's a drummer who knows
the role of the drums in a jazz band in the traditional sense, but
is sensitive to the colors and textures he can get out of his instrument
that makes for interesting listening."
It seems as though David's passion is taking him on new musical
adventures everyday. Nothing can stop this young, idealistic drummer.
Simply raw talent and innovative thinking will carry this creative
spirit very far. |

No boundaries. No limits. A challenging variety.
Imagine a group of musicians with nothing to hold them back. Conceptualize
the sounds of musical freedom. David Mahoney's Gathering has taken
music to a whole new level. The Gathering is not here to play music
that is safe. They are here to play in the moment. They are here
to bring their audience a new, innovative, and ever changing approach
to jazz.
The Gathering began almost by accident. With a free gig in the Loyola
University Underground, David Mahoney brought together a small group
of young musicians to play music and have a good time. Playing original
compositions and new standards, the group promised to surrender
to each moment and just let the music tell them what to do. This
experience and exploration is what motivated David Mahoney to form
The Gathering. The Gathering ideally consists of Scott Bourgeois
on saxophone, Tim Green on saxophone, Michael Pellera on piano,
Jesse Boyd on bass and David Mahoney on drums, yet virtually anyone
is invited to play with the group, as long as they are willing to
abandon all musical restrictions. The Gathering is constantly searching
for new themes and directions. Each player has the responsibility
to bring new concepts and never let the music stand still.
The Gathering has already gained the respect of numerous people
in the local music industry. Pianist Michael Pellera sees The Gathering
as "four excellent young musicians with a respect and knowledge
of jazz history, but totally rooted in the present." Perhaps
saxophonist Tony Dagradi sums up it up best with "an adventurous
ensemble...covering the gamut from be-bop to hip-hop.
"Fresh, exciting, and surprising, The Gathering is a pleasurable
representation of the new generation of jazz musicians. Enjoy... |
